Not-So-FAQ Part 2 [More Common Questions Beginner Adult Dancers Ask]

Our first few not-so-FAQs were such a hit, we’ve added a few more! If you have any more questions for us, let us know and we’ll try to answer them

What should I do if I’m injured?

This is always up to you – and your doctor! But we have some suggestions. First, if it’s a simple injury, you can always come to class and skip parts of the class that are too difficult. Don’t do grand pliés in ballet if your knees are sore, for example. Make sure you tell your teacher about your injury, so that you don’t push yourself too hard. Second, get diagnosed. If you’re not sure if your ankle is sprained, strained, or broken, the worst thing to do would be to overuse it and make it worse. Third, if your injury is severe and you know you can’t dance properly for a while, talk to your teacher and get a recovery plan. You can still watch classes to learn movements, work on core strength, and practice in ways that don’t affect your injury. We have tons of alternatives that will let you return to dance in better shape than before your injury!

What’s the difference between exam and competition schools?

At Dance Fusion Studios, we’re an exam and recital school. What that means is that we use a syllabus (in our case the British Association of Teachers of Dance) to guide us in what our students learn from level to level. Our youth (and adult!) dancers can take exams to assess their progress – it’s a great way to make sure that our dancers are learning safely and effectively, with fully qualified teachers. Our dancers get their performance thrills from our year-end recital, as well as dancing in the community at festivals and events. For us, the love of dance is paramount – and powerful.

What’s the etiquette of the studio?

Every dance studio has their own etiquette, those unspoken rules that make up any society. At Dance Fusion Studios, we’re pretty relaxed. If you’re late to class, come on in. If you don’t have the right dance clothes, no one will mind. The most important rule keeps our studio awesome: Be kind. Be kind to the other dancers – if you’re a regular, a kind word to a newbie can make their day. Be kind to your teacher – tell us if you’re having a bad day, or you need extra attention, or you like our music. And above all – be kind to yourself. It’s so easy to be critical of your own dancing, to get mad at yourself when you can’t nail that pirouette, or to say negative things about how you feel in leggings. We know you’d never say mean things about someone else, but negative self-talk is so easy – and so damaging. We love you, and we won’t let you say mean things about people we love!
