Passages: Scottish Heritage Through Dance
On Saturday, January 25, 2025, the Shenkman Arts Centre came alive with the powerful storytelling of Passages, produced by Dance Fusion Studios. Originally created by Caithream Celtic Dance Fusion, Passages is a deeply moving performance that traces the journey of Scottish emigration to Canada told through a fusion of highland, ballet, and contemporary dance styles.
This hour-long production was masterfully choreographed by Andrée Charlebois and Jenn Macquarrie, taking the audience on an emotional journey through five distinct acts:
Scotland Before the Rebellion – A glimpse into the vibrant culture and traditions of Scotland before the turbulence of the Jacobite Rising.
War – The struggles and sacrifices made during the Jacobite Rising, culminating in the final Battle of Culloden.
Aftermath – The devastation and displacement that followed.
On-Board – The perilous and hopeful journey across the Atlantic.
A New Life – The resilience and determination of Scottish immigrants in their new homeland.
It is estimated that nearly 100,000 Scottish immigrants made their way to Canada, and their legacy continues to shape our culture today. Passages beautifully honours their struggles, triumphs, and enduring spirit through the artistry of dance.
This revival was particularly special, as Passages originally premiered over a decade ago and won "Outstanding Ensemble" at Ottawa's Fringe Festival in 2013. After a 10+ year hiatus, its return to the stage was nothing short of spectacular, with two nearly sold-out performances.
The audience, filled with family, friends, and members of the Ottawa community, was captivated by the dancers' storytelling, passion, and precision.
