When Is It Time to Go on Pointe?
For many young ballet dancers, going on pointe is a dream milestone. The elegance, grace, and beauty of dancing en pointe symbolize years of hard work and dedication.
But when is the right time to take this next step? Here are the key factors to consider before making the transition.
Age & Physical Development
Most dancers begin pointe work around ages 11-13, but age alone isn’t the deciding factor. A dancer’s growth plates should be developed enough to handle the physical demands of pointe work. Starting too early can increase the risk of injury.
Strength & Technique
A dancer must have strong ankles, feet, legs, and core muscles to support themselves safely on pointe, as well as a strong alignment of foot plantarflexion (degree of point). Proper technique in demi-pointe work, balance, and alignment is crucial before advancing.
We often recommend working in demi-pointe, or soft-block shoes (like Grishko’s Exam shoe, available at Fusion Dance Supply) to strengthen toes and ankles, as well as increase stability and balance.
Consistent Training
Dancers should have several years of consistent ballet training (typically 5-10 years depending on age and level) before considering pointe. Regular attendance, dedication to practice, and a solid foundation in ballet technique are essential.
Teacher Approval
A trained ballet instructor plays a vital role in determining when a dancer is ready. They assess strength, control, posture, and readiness to ensure the transition is safe and appropriate.
At Dance Fusion Studios, we offer a Pre-Pointe Assessment with Jenn ($50), a one-on-one focused hour to find strategic areas to focus on - it’s the fastest way to hack the process and identify your weak spots right away! Based on Lisa Howell’s program, the assessment is useful for both dancers who want to move towards pointe work, as well as dancers already on pointe who want to progress faster.
Proper Fitting & Care
Once approved for pointe, getting professionally fitted for pointe shoes is a must! Ill-fitting shoes can cause pain and injury, so working with an experienced fitter ensures the best support. Additionally, proper foot care, stretching, and strengthening exercises become even more important. At Fusion Dance Supply, our professional fitters can help find a safe and supportive shoe that showcases your lines beautifully!
Patience & Readiness
Pointe work is exciting, but it requires patience! Rushing the process can lead to setbacks, so embracing the journey is key. Dancers who take the time to build strength and technique will have a more enjoyable and successful experience.
